Three days of spectacular shorts in Brisbane and Townsville!

Celebrating 23 years of short film excellence Flickerfest remains Australia’s leading short film festival. Flickerfest brings its ‘Spectacular Short Films With Soul’ to Brisbane’s Judith Wright Centre from 27 February to 1 March 2014, the School of Arts Theatre in Townsville from 27 February – 1 March also this week we head to Griffith Regional Theatre and The Oxford Hotel in Bathurst both on Friday 28 Feb. to screen a smorgasbord of shorts from Australia and around the world. As part of it’s National Tour, Flickerfest will visit 50 venues across all states of Australia.

Flickerfest remains Australia’s leading Academy® accredited and BAFTA recognised short film festival, ensuring that we continue to present A-list short film programmes recognised amongst the best in the world. Over 2,300 entries were received for Flickerfest 2014, and only the top 120 shorts have been selected in official competition, all handpicked to represent the most innovative, creative and cutting edge short films being produced in the world today.

Flickerfest will be screening an entertaining, inspiring and award winning range of shorts, many of which are world or Australian premieres, giving local Flickerfest audiences the first look at the hottest short films in the world today.  The calibre of this year’s program is undeniable with several films screening at some of the worlds most prominent and revered film festivals including Sundance and Cannes.

Highlights of Flickerfest 2014 include:
Best Of Australian Shorts programme: Written and directed by Brisbane-born Nick Waterman, Vote Yes, set in May 1967 focuses on Australia’s referendum on Aboriginal rights, as two women unite and come to terms with the prospect of change, starring Miranda Tapsell (‘The Sapphires’); Also, screening in Townsville, Griffith and Bathurst. In addition to this programme in Brisbane is Won-Bung Lung produced by local Queensland filmmaker Samantha Laidlaw, about a man who is winning at life – or so he thinks!

Best Of International 1 programme: A very moving & intimate short The Phone Call starring Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins and Oscar winner Jim Broadbent; & Today’s The Day Standing up against the inner voice that spreads doubt into what we believe in most our dreams, starring Danny DeVito; Also screening in Townsville. In addition to this programme in Brisbane is Maiden set in Brisbane’s outer suburbs during the late 70s, and explores themes of masculinity, violence and status, directed by Brisbane filmmaker Stephen Kanaris;

Best Of International 2 programme: A beautiful film about differences & acceptance with Kanyekanye; plus Linear a unique & quirky animated tale. In addition to this programme in Brisbane is Australian film The Landing, a gripping sci-fi thriller Written and Directed by Brisbane based Josh Tanner.
