The #Flickerfest2020 National Tour continues to win hearts and minds as it zig-zags across the country showcasing the very best short films from across Australia and around the world!
This weekend we bring an extravaganza of award-winning shorts to Griffith and Murwillumbah including some fab shorts from home-grown locals in the mix!
The following weekend we head to red centre across two great nights at the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs. We also head to Queensland, stopping off at Dalby and Chinchilla and to Huskisson and Port Macquarie in NSW!

GRIFFITH – SATURDAY 14TH MARCH!!
The Griffith Regional Theatre in Griffith will be sharing the short film love this Saturday night as the Best of Australian Shorts programme hits the big screen!
This programme of award winning shorts fresh from the Flickerfest Bondi competition programmes features the fabulous The Granny Flat, which was expertly narrated by Micaela Ellis who grew up in Griffith.
This hilarious and charming short tells the story of two siblings who wake up to find their house infested with grandmothers and a potential sea of knitted scarves and stewed quinces while their parents are off trainspotting.
MURWILLUMBAH – SUNDAY 15TH MARCH!!
What better way to spend a relaxing Autumn Sunday afternoon than heading to the stunning art deco Regent Cinema in Murwillumbah!!
The Flickerfest tour will stop off at the Northern NSW town with the Best of Australian Shorts programme this Sunday at 4 pm.
Multi-award winning short The Widow starring Steve Bastoni (Neighbours, Wentworth) and Daniela Farinacci (Lantana, Glitch) tells the story of a Sicilian widow who fights for her life when members of the local Calabrian mafia murder her husband and attempt seize control of his produce business. Set in 1965 Melbourne, the short was directed by Brendan Young and co-produced by Catherine McQuade who also composed the music and designed the costumes for the film. Both Brendan and Catherine will be in attendance to introduce the film at the Regent Cinema this Sunday!
From producer Liam Heyen (Top End Wedding, Cleverman) who grew up in nearby Ocean Shores and went to High School in Murwillumbah comes Strangers, a tender short set in an aged care facility where two female residents are discovered in bed with one another.
FLICKERFEST HEADS TO THE RED CENTRE!!
The following weekend the Flickerfest tour heads inland to Araluen Arts Centre in sunny Alice Springs!
Red hot comedies will kick off Opening Night on Friday 20th of March in the Short Laughs Comedy Programme including the hilarious Are You Hungry? from Finland in which a mother struggles to connect with her adopted teenage son, who she believes to be gay. In an attempt to guide him safely through this period of exploration, she sets him up on a date.
On Saturday night the Best of Australian Shorts will be front and centre featuring Elders from Writer/DIrector/Actor Tony Briggs (The Sapphires, Cleverman) the tale of two Elders who feel their grandson is ready to start learning vitally important lessons that will equip him with the tools to maintain the future survival of his culture.
From the NT comes the short documentary Djuwaḻpada fresh from Flickerfest’s Academy® Qualifying Documentary competition in Bondi, the story of Yolngu songman Daniel Wilfred from Southeast Arnhem Land sharing his culture to keep it alive. Daniel travels the world sharing his manikay (ceremonial song) and this is his story about the strength of culture and the power of collaboration.

Next weekend the Best of Australian Shorts may just drop in a town near you!!!
The programme of award winning shorts will stop off at the Western Downs on Friday 20th of March at the Dalby Cinema in Dalby and also at the Chinchilla Cinema in Chinchilla on Saturday 21st of March with both screenings including complimentary snacks and beverages! Both screenings will feature the Queensland made short It’s Christmas starring Gary Sweet in which it’s Darren’s first Christmas with the in-laws and his only job was to bring the prawns, but when the family become mysteriously ill, his fight for their approval becomes a fight for his life.
The Oz shorts will also head to the Majestic Cinemas in Port Macquarie and Huskisson Pictures in Huskisson NSW. The programme includes the super-charming For The Girl In The Coffee Shop by Rebekah Jackson in which to get his book published, a hopeless romantic must divulge his true feelings to his muse; the only problem is that he’s never actually spoken to her before. Rebekah Jackson will be at the Huskisson Picture to introduce the film prior to the 6 pm Best of Australian Shorts screening which will be followed by the Best of International Shorts programme at 8.30 pm featuring the Academy® Award nominated short animation Memorable from France.
