Dear Flickerfest friends far and wide,

Since opening our entries in July our 2023 short film contenders have been coming in droves, with many exceptional entries received from at home and around the world. Thanks to all of our wonderful selection committee who are glued to their screens considering a feast of entries so far.

This September/October Flickerfest is on the road to Cairns and 4 venues across Western Downs QLD and even further afield to Monterrey in Mexico! 

We also have a number of tour events and activities in October to share with you, including a youth workshop and screening in Mullumbimby, two special programmes for the opening season of the newly renovated and super stylish Bondi Pavilion in partnership with Waverley council and our tour screenings in Merimbula NSW.


ON TOUR CAIRNS & WESTERN DOWNS – SEPT/OCT

This September and October Flickerfest is rolling out in regional Queensland. 

Our Best Of Australian Shorts and Short Laughs comedy highlights will light up the screen for our film loving Cairns audiences over two big nights at the Cairns Botanical Gardens, Sat 24th Sept and Sat 1st Oct, in partnership with End Credits Film Club and their outdoor Starry Night Cinema screenings. Highlights from the Best of Australian Shorts include the moving and insightful ‘Strange Country’ which had its world premiere at Flickerfest in 2022.  Shot across the Cairns region by writer/director/producer Rhys Day, who was born and bred in the area and inspired by its landscapes, ‘Strange Country’ was awarded Best Cinematography in an Australian Short Film at Flickerfest 2022. This captivating short was co-produced and shot by award-winning Aboriginal cinematographer Tyson Perkins and stars acclaimed actor Hunter Page-Lochard.

In September and early October Flickerfest is also excited to be returning to the Western Downs and 4 halls across the region including Bell, Wandoan, Warra and Meandarra, all enjoying one inspiring night of Australian Short Films, thanks to our partnership with Western Downs regional Council. Joining much loved stars Paul McDermott, Tara Morice and Rose Byrne on the big screen are our next generation of rising stars, including the super talented writer, producer and QLD actor George Pullar (ABC’s Barons) in his delightful black comedy film debut ‘Stonefish’

FLiCKERFEST & ONE VISION PRODUCTIONS
BYRON WORKSHOP & MULLUM SCREENING

Flickerfest and One Vision Productions are stoked to announce an upcoming September holiday workshop and October screening in collaboration with Flickerfest and supported by the Office for Regional Youth Holiday Break Program in partnership with Create NSW.

The workshop is for 13 to 18 years olds from flood affected communities in the shire to who will participate in a 5 day workshop, creating an original hip hop song and music video.

To celebrate, the final video will be included at a special Flickerfest community screening in Mullumbimby on the 8th of October, where local youth and community will come together, enjoy some uplifting short films, and see their stories on the big screen.


OCTOBER ON TOUR – HOLA MEXICO AND MERIMBULA

In late September and October Flickerfest also heads across the seas to Mexico, screening 9 incredible Australian short films handpicked from Flickerfest 2022 as part of the Australian spotlight at the Monterrey Festival, University of Monterrey, on the 28th of September and the 5th of October, in partnership with the the Australian Consulate of Mexico and Screen Australia.  

Closer to home Flickerfest returns to Merimbula on the South Coast of NSW and joins our partners at the Twyford theatre for two spectacular nights on 7th and 8th October showcasing the Best of Australian Shorts and Short Laughs Comedy programmes.

On Friday 7th October, 7pm the Best of Australian Shorts programme shines a spotlight on the incredible short film talent that exists in our emerging Australian industry. Including the moving ‘Giants’ which took home our Academy® qualifying, Panasonic LUMIX Award for Best Australian Short film and the AVID award for Best Original Music at Flickerfest 2022, from writer/director Eddy Bell. 

On Saturday 8th October, 7pm our Short Laughs Comedy programme of clever comedies from at home and across the world is on, including acclaimed Australian actor/director Nash Edgerton’s hilarious black comedy ‘Shark’ starring Nash and legendary Australian actress Rose Byrne.

Also stay tuned, as on Sunday 2nd October Flickerfest will also present two very special programmes in partnership with Waverley council to herald the reopening of the fabulous and stylish iconic Bondi Beach Pavilion. Flickerfest is thrilled to return to our old home with a very stylish new face and we cant wait to celebrate with some incredible shorts on the big screen this spring, in preparation for our festival return to the Bondi Pav next January.
