The Flickerfest Tour Kicks Off in Bangalow, Perth and Brisbane

Wow, has it been over a week since Flickerfest 2023 already!? Where does time go – there’s no rest for the wicked at Flicker HQ though, as we steam ahead to get the Flickerfest Tour on the road and ready to rumble! 

We want to say a huge thank you to all of our Bondi friends last month – there is nothing we love more than seeing happy audiences watching exceptional short films! And a massive congratulations again to our worthy winners. If you missed the award announcement, you can see who won all of the Flickerfest 2023 Awards here. 

We have a huge month ahead as the Flickerfest 2023 Tour kicks off with a bang! We’re off to Bangalow Northern NSW, Perth and Brisbane to start with, so read on to find out when and where to be in your local town and check out the full National Tour here!

It’s Great Short Films, It’s On Tour, It’s The Vibe!
Flickerfest and iQ inc are back for 2023, kicking off our 3-day festival of short films at the A&i Hall Bangalow, Thursday 16th – Saturday 18th February.
This years smorgasbord of over 40 incredible short films are handpicked from a record 3,200 entries received for Flickerfest’s Academy® and BAFTA Qualifying short film festival screened recently in Bondi and Northern Rivers audiences are the first in Australia to experience the best of Flickerfest on tour.Highlights enjoying their Northern Rivers premieres include recent Academy® nominees and much loved festival award winners, all handpicked to excite and inspire our local audiences with the best Australian and international short films the world has to offer, screening alongside exciting, fresh local talent.

Local Northern Rivers highlights fresh from their world premieres in competition at Flickerfest Bondi include the moving and insightful cultural drama Bangay Lore by First Nations writer/director Jahvis Loveday (Special Mention of the Jury Flickerfest 2023) and the powerful drama Six Of One by writer/ director Minka Bleakley that explores the growing empowerment of a young mother in the midst of an unsupportive relationship, set in the Byron Hinterland.

(join us for opening night drinks and delicious snacks from 7pm; films roll at 8pm)
Fri 17th Feb, 8pm:Best of Australian Shorts
Sat 18th Feb, 4pm:Byron All Shorts – Nth Rivers Short Film comp
Sat 18th Feb, 8pm:Short Laughs Comedy

Cafe open from 7pm for each screening- come along for refreshments, get comfy and enjoy the films!


WE’RE ON THE WAY TO THE WEST…

Join us at the Camelot Outdoor Cinema in Mosman Park, Perth.
Thursday 23rd – Saturday 25th February for what promises to be the ultimate showcase of short film on the West Coast! 

This programme is one not to be missed, with the Best of Australian Shorts including amazing WA highlights such as Good Fortune, in which a woman gets a little more (or less!?) than she bargained for when she goes to a fortune teller, the very relatable rom-com Match Made, which sees a young man searching for love on the dating app landscape, but to what avail? and the stunning Wirnitj from talented First Nations filmmaker Karla Hart, based on a story of mysterious rocks falling from the sky, told to her by her uncle Noongar elder Aron Eades 

Also screening will be our Best of EU Shorts, featuring Oscar nominated Danish short IVALU, as well as the funniest night out you’ll have in February with our Short Laughs Comedy highlights!  

The short films screening are all entertaining, inspiring, award-winning and fresh from their premieres in competition at Flickerfest Bondi, giving Perth Flickerfest audiences a window into the hottest contemporary shorts from at home and across the world today.

Thu 23rd Feb, 7.30pm – Best of Australian Shorts – doors open at 6:30pm for complimentary food & drinks on opening night
Fri 24th Feb, 7.30pm – Best of EU Shorts Showcase
Sat 25th Feb, 7.30pm – Short Laughs Comedy

Thursday 2nd March – join us in Brisbane.
One night only!  Palace James St Cinemas.

The very best that Australia and QLD have to offer will be on show, with 6 out of the 8 films all filmed in Queensland. We will be lucky enough at each tour venue to welcome some filmmakers along, so  grab a drink and meet the talented creatives behind these epic shorts.

Katele (Mudskipper) won Best Australian Short Film at our Bondi Festival in January and was shot in Brisbane and Saibai Island, whilst A Stretching Moment proved to be a huge favourite with audiences, and will definitely feature spots you recognise, like your local cafe perhaps!

Doors from 6:30pm, films at 7pm. Enjoy a complimentary drink on arrival, go the behind the scenes with the filmmakers as they introduce their films, then sit back, relax and watch the best of Aussie short films made in your own backyard!
