FLiCKERFEST 2023 LAUNCHES TONIGHT AT BONDI PAVILION

Flickerfest 2023 kicks off tonight with a Sold Out opening event and much excitement to come for our celebration of the world and Australia’s best short films over the next 10 days.

This weekend catch an incredible selection of international, Australian and Documentary shorts in our Oscar® Qualifying competitions, with 8 stunning programmes rolling out to inspire and delight on our big screens. Be ahead of the short film curve and catch the latest trends from our freshest and most creative filmmakers and meet many of this years finalists who will be along to introduce their films.

Our outdoor sessions will move to our indoor cinema if its raining ensuring a comfortable viewing experience for all Flickerfest sessions.

BEST OF INTERNATIONAL SHORTS 1

At 1.30pm dont miss the first screening of the festival in the newly renovated Bondi Pavilion theatre with our Best of International 1 programme shorts, all vying for the Oscar® Qualifying Best International Short Film & Best International Animated short. Check out the Australian premiere of the masterful The Fourth from director Johnny Kirk, which tells the story of a group of young black and Latino friends who experience a police encounter that shatters the meaning of the holiday and the delightful This Will Not Be A Festival Film from Polish Writer/Director Julia Orlik, a heartwarming and intimate look at the joys and pitfalls of being an animator, as a director forces her family to star in her own movie.


BEST OF AUSTRALIAN SHORTS 1

At 4pm catch the first of our seven Australian competition programmes with our Best of Australian 1  films on the big screen, all vying for the Academy® Qualifying Panasonic Lumix Award for Best Australian Short Film. Highlights include the World premiere of the colourful Katele (Mudskipper) from award winning writer/director John Harvey, co-writer Walter Waia and producer Gillian Moody (Black Divaz). Shot on location in Brisbane and Sabai Island, Katele stars Martha, a Torres Strait Islander woman working in the city, who is drawn back to her cultural home by a mysterious visitor.

At 630pm our  Best of Australian 2 Programme also celebrates the best stories from our own backyard, including the world premiere of the incredibly fun Wonder Down Under about Barb Barrett your everyday Australian mum who used to be a superhero, until life got in the away. Barb must now  overcome her toughest challenges yet to rejoin the workforce and find a job that allows her to use her special skills. 


BEST OF AUSTRALIAN 3 SHORTS

At 9pm catch some of Australia’s most innovative stories kicking off the Flickerfest 2023 outdoor big cinema screen under the stars in our Best of Australian 3 programme. Catch the NSW Premiere of the stunning and thought provoking Australian Director’s Guild Award winner Mud Crab, shot on the Central Coast of NSW by AFTRS alumni David Robinson Smith, influenced by his own experiences in a small Australian coastal town.
