  • The Yoram Gross Award for Best International Animation
  • The Panasonic Lumix Award for Best Australian Short Film
  • The Flickerfest Award for Best Documentary
  • The Specsavers Award for Best Australian Comedy Short

Plus a host of other hotly contested prizes, which recognise the various craft areas inherent in making a great short film including the FlickerUp National School Student and Youth competition for filmmakers under 18 and the Rainbow Shorts Competition featuring the best LGBTQI+ films from at home and around the world.

Flickerfest is also home to our ever popular short film showcases including:

  • FlickerKids, short films suitable for kids aged 4-12 years and the young at heart.
  • Short Laughs Comedy, two fantastic comedy programmes that will have you in stitches.
  • LoveBites, films about love and relationships.
  • Indigenous Spotlight, shining a spotlight on the incredible indigenous talent featured across our 2024 festival programmes.

The 2024 Australian programme will include some incredibly masterful and creative short films. Highlights include the world premiere of the outstanding drama Unspoken directed and produced by Damian Walshe-Howling and the poignant Cold Water starring Bruce Spence, directed by Melbourne brothers Jay and Shaun Perry.

Further highlights include a must-see home grown powerful documentary Finding Home from Bondi local Lester Jones, plus Cactus by Flickerfest Alumni Milena Bennett, starring Tiarnie Coupland. This delicate film is a beautiful love letter to the Inner West suburb of Marrickville and the friction that exists in a melting pot of different cultures, people, and cats.

The prestigious International Programme at Flickerfest 2024 takes us from the streets of South America to the mountains of India; intertwining culture, hard-hitting truths and dreamlike fantasy. With 40 films from 28 countries, see the world from the comfort of your Flickerfest chair, and visit, Korea, Sweden, Colombia and everywhere in between, embracing the variety of people, characters and stories that create a unique worldview.

In the Oscar Qualifying International competition, watch out for the Australian premiere of 7 Minutes, a new dark comedy directed by BAFTA and EMMY winner and comedy legend Ricky Gervais, the outstanding War Is Over, a 10-minute animated production set to the track Happy Xmas (War is Over) by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the song’s release and brought to life by director Dave Mullins, with co-executive producers Sean Ono Lennon and Peter Jackson and the world premiere of My Week With Maisy starring a tear-jerking performance from queen of the stage and screen Joanna Lumley.

Flickerfest is thrilled to bring our global carnival of shorts to the relaxed and iconic environment of Bondi Beach again this year. Returning to our home over over 2 decades, the newly revamped Bondi Pavilion, in partnership with Waverley Council

Following the Bondi season, Flickerfest hits the road for a massive 8-month tour, reaching 50+ metro and regional venues across all states, bringing the joy of Flickerfest to the rest of the country!

Flickerfest has been a major launching pad for some of Australia’s and the world’s most celebrated filmmakers.
