MARCH: THE SHORT FILMS MARATHON CONTINUES

The Flickerfest Tour is going great guns! – thanks to all our passionate film-audiences who have attended so far with successful screenings over the weekend in Perth, Coffs Harbour and Mullumbimby. In Mullumbimby we were also thrilled to host the 19th year of our Northern Rivers Byron All Shorts competition, with 13 local finalists screened across the weekend and prizes awarded in various categories. You can check out all of our excited award winners here. A big thanks to our local jury: producers Kath Shelper and Tim Maddox, and writer/director Gemma Lee. TOOWOOMBA THIS WEEKEND

Empire Theatre, Toowoomba – Saturday 9th March, 5.30pm & 8pm

Don’t miss our return to our much loved venue, The Empire Theatre Toowoomba, screening two stunning programmes of festival favourites and award winners across one big night.

At 5.30pm Flickerfest’s Best of International Shorts programme takes our audiences on a cinema trip through Sweden, India, UK, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Spain, and many more…Enjoy My Week with Maisy, starring stage and screen legend Joanna Lumley and the delightful Czech animation My Name Is Edgar and I Have A Cow.

Also shining on the big screen at 8pm is our much loved Best of Australian Shorts programme
features 9 Aussie short films. Catch the latest Australian short films including the hilarious Ashes written and directed by the talented Georgina Haigh, who stars alongside laugh-out-loud performances from comedy masters Michael Caton and Michala Banas.
– Unspoken, capturing the 1979’s protests for Croatian independence in Sydney, from filmmaker and actor Damian Walshe-Howling (Underbelly) with costume design by Toowoomba local Maddie Barlow.
– The Bank Manager, a comedy of errors based on the true story of a bank robbery in Cloncurry in 1932, from the talented Madeleine Chaplain.

FLiCKERFEST SHINES AT HOTA GOLD COAST

Gold Coast HOTA Cinemas – Thursday 14th March, 7pm

For one night only, on Thursday 14th March, the Best of Australian Shorts programme, featuring 10 stunning shorts, including festival award winners and audience favourites will hit the HOTA big screen.

QLD films shine including the romantic comedy Sideswipe, directed by Tyson Yates, Unsettled directed by Katrina Channels The Bank Manager By Madeleine Chapman and Luke Chaplain, plus stunning winners of our Bondi Festival:
– AFTRS Award for Best Screenplay Cold Water, starring industry legend Bruce Spence from filmmakers Jay & Shaun Perry.
– Winner of Panasonic Lumix Award for Best Australian Short Film (Academy® Qualifying) Yeah The Boys from Vanessa Marian Varghese and Stefan Hunt, exploring the Australian masculine identity and our nation’s relationship with drinking culture, with an original sound track from The Avalanches.

Another highlight is the compelling First Nations drama Djalbuyan Nahra by 3rd time Alumni writer/director Jahvis Loveday, who takes a personal approach to his filmmaking in this family story of return and reconnection.

Come along on the night and meet Jahvis Loveday; and Luke Chaplain producer of ‘The Bank Manager’ and festival director Bronwyn Kidd, who looks forward to introducing the programme with them.

ALICE SPRINGS FILM WEEKEND UNDER THE STARS

Alice Springs Araluen Arts Centre Circus Lawns – Friday 22 March – Saturday 23 March at 7pm.Join us as we return to the red centre for a magical weekend of film.

Don’t miss the stunning animation Darwin Story directed by NT raised Natasha Tonkin, be the guest of Cordelia for her wedding day in the World Premiere of Cordelia, Daughter Of The Sea and witness the blossoming of an unlikely friendship between a reclusive and bitter retiree and Saleha, 8-year-old Pakistani in the charming First Drop, shot on location in Alice Springs by local residents, writer and director Damon Van Der Schuit and producers Emma Alix Smith and Bridget May

On Saturday 23rd March enjoy an incredible collection of global stories with the Best of International Shorts. Amongst a host of international highlights is the stunning Sundance and Flickerfest jury winner Spanish drama The Masterpiece from Àlex Lora, the World Premiere of the bittersweet UK drama My Week With Maisy starring the legendary Joanna Lumley, and the surprising and finely crafted Irish short Clodagh about a young woman of exceptional talent, who dazzles a lonely priest’s housekeeper and upends her routine life in unusual and charming ways.

Plus: AFTRS x FlickerLab – Short Film Masterclass with Director Damon van der Schuit & Gaffer Thomas Howlett

Join us for a deep dive into the Flickerfest film First Drop, where the director and crew members will detail the development and production of the film, shot on location in Alice Springs with a crew including several AFTRS graduates. Learn about studying screen production, pathways into the industry, the process of short film making, as well as building your team and your audience.

Damon van der Schuit is a writer, director and musician born and raised in Alice Springs. He is passionate about telling stories that both entertain and resonate on a humanistic level. Whilst completing a bachelor’s in psychology he began taking classes in screenwriting as a way of instilling some creativity to the science-heavy curriculum. This grew into a passion that eventually led him to study Filmmaking at AFTRS in Sydney. First Drop is his directorial debut, it had its world premiere at the Darwin International Film Festival, was officially selected for Flickerfest Bondi and plays as part of the Best of Australian Shorts, Fri 22 March at 7:30pm at the Araluen Circus Lawns.
