This Weekend Newcastle – Here We Come!

It been a big few months on the road.
A huge thanks to all of our audiences and filmmakers who have shared the short film love at the past 30 venues on our national tour.

This weekend it’s Newcastle’s turn at the Civic Playhouse Theatre

On Saturday 10th June 6.30pm the Best of Australian Shorts Newcastle programme shines a spotlight on the incredible short film talent that exists in our Australian industry. 

Local films shine alongside festival award winners, including ‘Mud Crab’ by writer/director David Robinson-Smith who grew up in Budgewoi and based the film on his own experiences of growing up in this small coastal town. ‘Mud Crab’ recounts the memories of a woman who reflects on her own culpability in the treatment of a young man who is different from the rest, produced by Adam Daniel and Adam Finney. Also on the big screen and enjoying its hometown premiere is comedy ‘Sticky Beak’co-written and directed by Eloise Woodward, co-written by Liam Shaw & produced by Mitch Bain, where a missing dog gets the neighbourhood stickybeak in a tizz. ‘Sticky Beak’ was shot on location in Stockton and involved an extensive cast and crew from the Newcastle area.

On Saturday 10th June 9pm you can also enjoy clever comedy bringing joy to the big screen with the Short Laughs Comedy programme, which includes Flickerfest shorts from at home and around the world. Highlights include the delightfully quirky French comedy romance, ‘Born to Cry’winner of Best International Short Film at Flickerfest 2023, and the delightful Australian absurdist comedy ‘An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake And I Think I Believe It’, recently nominated for an Oscar.

Enjoy a complimentary drink in the foyer between sessions and toast to our talented filmmakers Adam Daniel and Adam Finney from ‘Mud Crab’ and Eloise Woodward writer/director ‘Sticky Beak’ who will be there to introduce their films on the night ; along with the Flickerfest team.

Aussie Shorts Shine At Katherine Cinema 3

We’re thrilled to be returning to the Katherine Cinema 3 on Thursday 13 July, 7pm with our Best Of Australian Shorts Katherine programme 

Local NT films star on the big screen, alongside festival favourites and award winners. Enjoy the charming and funny Darwin Short film ‘The Wardrobe’ by NT writer/director Kate Wyvill and producer Sarah Price, a hilarious tale about a harassed mother who finds a unique way of taking revenge; plus the Insightful stop-motion animation ‘Kukaputju (The Hunter)’ by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers, cultural director Yanyangkari Roma Butler and animator Jonathon Daw. It is a story told in the language of Pitjantjatjara, as an Aṉangu woman gives a beautifully expressive account of a day hunting in the bush.

And don’t miss ‘The Pleasure Of Meeting Someone’, the first short written and directed by cinematographer Callum Flinn. Callum recently lived in Katherine where he was an active member of the film society, worked for Katherine regional arts and was involved in many regional arts projects across the region.


Hobart’s Filmmakers Join The Programme

Save the date Hobart film friends. Flickerfest is thrilled to be returning to Hobart with an award winning International programme and stunning Australian shorts including local highlights. 
at the Peacock Theatre Salamanca Arts Centre 

On Friday 14th July 8pm enjoy an incredible collection of global stories, as you take a trip around the world from the comfort of your cinema chair with the Best of International Shorts programme. Amongst a host of international highlights enjoying their Australian premieres are the stunning Danish drama ‘IVALU’ that follows the intimate story of an Inuit family in the vast landscapes of Greenland and the delightful and surprising Canadian animation, ‘The Flying Sailor’, by a power duo of Female Canadian animators, both films were recently nominated for an Oscar.

On Saturday 15th July 8pm the Best of Australian Shorts Hobart programme shines. Highlights include Tassie films, fresh from their Flickerfest premieres, by talented creatives who grew up in Tassie and films shot across the state.

The moving drama ‘Game Face’, by Hobart born and raised writer/director Gillian Crosby, co-written with her mum and based on her mum’s experiences of a confidence workshop for cancer patients where a woman gains a fresh perspective from a colourful group of characters. Fun coming of age story ‘Pulsar’, by Hobart born and raised Gabriele Morrison is shot in Primrose Sands and doesn’t stray too far from the truth of some experiences Gabriele had growing up in Hobart in the early 2000’s. Director Danielle Baynes, who was awarded the BRUNY20 Artist Fellowship, shot her short film ‘Ghost Gear’ on Bruny Island, utilising local cast, crew and the stunning landscape, this dramatic story follows two fractured parents and their adventurous 8-year-old are haunted by a surprising discovery on a family holiday.

Merimbula Weekend Of Shorts

Its Merimbula’s turn at the Twyford Theatre – Friday 14th & Saturday 15th July, 7.30pm

On Friday 14th July 7.30pm, clever comedy brings joy to the big screen with the Short Laughs Comedy programme of Flickerfest shorts from at home and around the world. Highlights include the delightfully quirky French comedy romance, ‘Born to Cry’, winner of Best International Short Film at Flickerfest 2023, the laugh out loud Swedish comedy ‘The Diamond’, a bizarre and hilarious story about a small man and his tiny friend and the delightful ‘An Ostrich Told Me The World Is Fake And I Think I Believe It’, recently Oscar nominated for Best Short Animation.

On Saturday 15th July 7.30pm, the Best of Australian Shorts Merimbula programme shares a host of 9 Australian stories honouring our unique identity and culture. 

Highlights include festival award winners, the colourful and insightful Torres Strait cultural drama ‘Katele (Mudskipper)’ about a woman longing for home, winner of the Best Australian Short Film Award at Flickerfest 2023; while ‘Lean’ is a contemporary father/son drama starring Nicholas Hope (Bad Boy Bubby, Picnic at Hanging Rock) and Harry Greenwood (The Nightingale, Hacksaw Ridge); and the Flickerfest Best Australian Animation winner ‘Teacups’, based on a moving true story of a man whose compassion made a huge difference in many lives.


Darwin Delights With Best Of Australian & Comedy Shorts

We roll back into Darwin at the Deckchair Cinema – Saturday 22nd July, 7pm & 9pm

The Best of Australian Shorts Darwin programme of 9 Australian shorts screens on Saturday 22nd July 7pm, and we are thrilled to celebrate NT films in the mix. Enjoy the charming and funny Darwin Short film ‘The Wardrobe’ by local writer/director Kate Wyvill and producer Sarah Price, a hilarious tale about a harassed mother who finds a unique way of taking revenge, that includes stunning performances by its Darwin cast. 

Another not to be missed NT short is the Insightful stop-motion animation ‘Kukaputju (The Hunter)’ by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers, Cultural director Yanyangkari Roma Butler and animator Jonathon Daw.
